10 years ago we started the Pam Fergusson Charitable Trust to inspire tamariki into STEAM. In that time we have done so much. We have been in the lives of 100,000 kids all across Aotearoa, from teaching robotics, coding, science and invention to supporting kaiako and teachers to be awesome STEAM educators in their schools. We have grown our team of awesomenators and we opened a school camp to teach science and technology in the context of protecting our environment. We weathered COVID and leaned into digital equity and learning. We’ve pioneered new practices in the classroom.

It’s been busy, hard and cool.

We always said from the start that we would not always be needed and when that day comes it would be happy and sad. Bittersweet.

Unfortunately, today is that day. Funding is no longer available and where there are limited funds in the pool it is rightfully going to other new programmes run by authentic voices in our communities. Not that we are old and stale but there is new energy in other organisations taking up the mantle. A change in priorities for government also means we need to stop our digital education – something we obviously don’t agree with, but it is what it is. Schools, communities and our corporate partners are all going through a tough period too. Their priorities have all shifted as we all work through hard economic times.

So, we’ve made the hard decision to wind up the day-to-day operations of the Pam Fergusson Charitable Trust.

It’s not a sad ending. We have loved the work and watching the impact within our communities. In fact, we are now watching our tamariki grow up to be the new leaders, continuing the work. You don’t have to be the boss of the world to change it, you just inspire others to make the change too. I feel that is exactly what we have done.

So what does this mean for the Trust? Well, we say goodbye to an amazing awesome team. They are always whānau and many of them are continuing the work in new forms. An ending creates new beginnings.

Pam Fergusson Charitable Trust has always been a collective effort made possible by the thousands of hours from our volunteers, staff, partners and contractors. Many of our partners and contractors are still carrying on their incredible mahi, and will still be around to support schools and communities with all their STEAM needs.

Our content (all ten years of it!) will still be available on the OMGTech! website. We hope others will adapt our workshops and online courses to suit the needs of their communities. Again, not an end, and perhaps many exciting new things will come from it.

The school camp and lodge, The Institute of Awesome (InAwe) – Zoe’s and my whare – is still welcoming communities and schools to come to stay; plus we are looking for new exciting things to host there so if you have a awesome idea get in touch! Everyone is welcome.

So an end is not an end at all. We now look forward to watching tamariki grow and make the impact they dreamt of. We always said they will be the ones who change the world.

We are excited to see what happens next.
