A New Day
Above me brilliant stars like far off city lights hang in the sky. There is no sound except for the waves coming onto the shore below. Beyond the horizon the sun is on its way to greet me. The sky tones from black to deep blue. Two doors down an elderly Greek man on his balcony joins me in waiting for the sun across the bay. We signal ‘good morning’ to each other and he settles himself down with his coffee and front row seat. A rooster is gently crowing, reminding the bay of the new day and the duties it involves. Somewhere else in the bay a digital rooster is not so gently reminding someone that it is 7:30 and a busy day lies ahead. A cat scampers home down the lane after a busy night out. Up on the hill a bird wakes and starts its vocal morning exercises while a captain motors his fishing boat silently into the middle of the bay. The horizon glows orange and blue and one by one the stars are blown out from the sky by the sea breeze. A flock of geese fly’s west overhead then turns south, the front geese honking as they turn so as to not loose the tail of the formation. It is an early start for them as they have a lot of ground to cover. Three, five then nine the boats motor across the bay. Three million, five then none the stars put themselves to bed for another day. From every where a chorus of bird song fills the air. It is a noisy chatter like the birds are excited. The rooster still crows. The boats chug chug chug in the bay. A dog is howling somewhere. The sun crawls up and over the hill across the bay and the birds are silent, the boats are gone and the bay is quiet. This is how every day starts on the islands.
